What’s Thrifty Martini?

Thrifty Martini is a little newsletter designed to share information with people who want to know and understand more about finances (geared to people who are typically in groups that have historically been financially marginalized). We go over everything from financial behaviours and attitudes, to setting budgets, to saving and investing (although nothing we write should ever be taken as full-on expert advice—we’re just novices learning as we go).

We’ll share resources, maybe go through some financial books, and possibly even do some challenges to help us get ahead.

What I believe

I believe the following to be true:

  1. Every individual has the right to information, knowledge, autonomy, agency, and independence in their own finances.

  2. Every individual has a responsibility to themselves to understand at least a base level about finances, so they can make informed decisions—and too often what we think of as “knowledge” is actually just a set of beliefs we picked up from other people, who may not have any more information than we have.

  3. Every and any financial behaviour can be changed if we are intentional and mindful about it.

  4. By having knowledge, information, education, agency, and mindfulness we are more likely to take control of our finances rather than be victims of it (and maybe protect ourselves against fraud and scams, too).

  5. Finances are deeply personal. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. There is no need to shame, judge, or condemn anyone for their financial priorities, including ourselves. Taking control of finances means focusing on what does and doesn’t work for us as individuals and building on that.
